Fat Dissolving

Fat dissolving (deoxycholic acid) injection is indicated for improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat in adults.

Overview:

Belkyra is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.”
Belkyra is the first non-surgical injectable treatment in Canada that eliminates fat cells under the chin. It contains a patented formulation of deoxycholic acid, an acid that is a naturally occurring substance in our bodies used to digest fat in our diets. In the hands of an expert
injector Belkyra is injected into the submental area and the deoxycholic acid works to destroy the fat cell membrane allowing the fat to be dissolved out of the body.

Anyone who is bothered by their double chin, or submental fullness is a good candidate for Belkyra treatment. Most patients need 2 to 4 treatments of Belkyra. The best approach is to book a complimentary consultation to find out what your treatment plan would be and how many treatments you would require to achieve your desired results. The best part about this treatment is its permanency. Once the fat cells are destroyed they are gone forever, and generally there is no need to repeat the treatment.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION:

• It is not known if Belkyra is safe and effective for the treatment of fat
outside of the submental area.
• It is not known if Belkyra is safe and effective in children under 18 years of age.
• The safe and effective use of Belkyra for the treatment of
subcutaneous fat outside the submental region has not been
established and is not recommended.
• Every patient is different and post-treatment downtime can vary. Most
patients experience swelling for the first week after their treatment.
You can also expect to experience some pain and bruising after the
first treatment so we recommend keeping this in mind when
scheduling your social plans and work commitments.

The most commonly reported adverse reactions in the pivotal clinical trials were: injection site edema/swelling, hematoma/bruising, pain,
numbness, erythema, and induration. In general subjects almost %75 of people treated with Belkyra experience hematoma/bruising. Belkyra should be used with caution in patients with bleeding abnormalities or who are currently being treated with antiplatelet or anticoagulant therapy as excessive bleeding or bruising in the treatment area may occur.

A- Before receiving Belkyra, tell your doctor about all of your medical
conditions, including if you:
1- have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin
2- have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin
3- have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area
4- have had or have trouble swallowing
5- have bleeding problems
6- are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known if Belkyra
will harm your unborn baby.
7- are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if Belkyra
passes into your breast milk.
8- take any medication, including prescription and over-the-counter
medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. Especially tell your
healthcare provider if you take a medicine that prevents the clotting of
your blood (antiplatelet or anticoagulant medicine).

B- Avoid aspirin for 10 days, ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil), other non-
steroidal medications (Aleve) and Vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, and fish
oil supplements for 5 days prior to the procedure, because these
medications will make you more likely to bruise. If you have been
prescribed one of these medications, ask your doctor before you stop

taking it. Tylenol will not cause bruising and is preferred for the week
prior to treatment. C- To avoid possible discomfort, you may take 1g of acetaminophen
(i.e. Tylenol) one hour prior to your scheduled appointment.

A- Expect swelling, bruises pain and numbness which is worse in
the first 2 days and gets better gradually. It may last about 5-12 days.
B- Don’t participate in any strenuous activity for 3 days.
C- After 3 days start to massage the area gently.
